The Global Alliance Against Industrial Aquaculture (GAAIA) is an international network dedicated to advancing environmentally and socially responsible aquaculture. GAAIA recognizes that salmon, shrimp, tuna and 'Frankenfish' farming jeopardizes sustainable and safe seafood production.
By highlighting worst aquaculture practices, GAAIA will lead the fight against standards-setting and certification schemes for farmed salmon and shrimp farming in particular. GAAIA will resist moves towards tuna farming, offshore fish farming and genetically engineered fish.
The farming of carnivorous fish and shellfish such as salmon, tuna and shrimp is inherently unsustainable, socially irresponsible and ethically bankrupt. Salmon, shrimp and tuna farms are polluting the environment, draining precious marine resources and spreading infectious diseases and parasites around the globe. Industrial aquaculture is socially destructive contributing to deaths of workers on farms, degrading traditional food resources and ignoring the rights of indigenous peoples. Genetic engineering and the development of 'Frankenfish' poses unnecessary risks to the environment, food safety and wild fisheries.
We oppose the certification of farmed salmon and shrimp as 'sustainable,' 'environmentally friendly' and 'socially responsible' by the Global Aquaculture Alliance, Aquaculture Stewardship Council and other shameless Ponzi schemes. Put simply - there is no right way to do the wrong thing.
We call on consumers to urge retailers to stop selling farmed salmon, farmed shrimp and farmed tuna and promote the farming of species lower down the food chain. GAAIA supports a ban on 'Frankenfish' and an end to the genetic engineering of fish.
Join the Global Alliance Against Industrial Aquaculture in the fight to protect the health of our global ocean, the health of consumers and the health of coastal communities and fisheries around the world.
